Jeonbuk National University (JBNU)'s 12th president, the late President Jang Myung-su, who laid the foundation for the university's development, is being honored as his spouse, Mrs. Lee Soon-rye, donated a development fund of 10 million won in keeping with his educational philosophy.

JBNU held a donation ceremony on February 5 in the President's Office at University Headquarters. The ceremony was attended by President Yang Oh-bong; Mrs. Lee Soon-rye; the late president's son, Mr. Jang Won; Professor Emeritus Ko Young-ho; alumnus Joo Hyung-sik (Department of Resources Engineering); and other bereaved family members and officials.

The donation was made to commemorate the late President Jang Myung-su's devotion to the university—he served as a JBNU professor and president and nurtured the campus into one of the most beautiful in the country—and to express Mrs. Lee Soon-rye's wish to encourage students who are devoted to their studies despite difficult circumstances.

Having quietly watched JBNU's growth alongside the late president, Mrs. Lee designated the donation as the 'Jeonbuk Scholarship' and expressed her hope that it would be used to support students so they can plan their futures without financial worries. The university will use the fund for student scholarships in accordance with the donor's wishes.

At the donation ceremony, the bereaved family said, 'We decided to make this donation in the hope that the president's wish—he cherished the university as if it were his own body—will be passed on to younger generations,' and added, 'Although it is a small gesture, we hope it will serve as a catalyst for JBNU students to nurture greater dreams on the green campus the late president cultivated.'

President Yang Oh-bong responded, 'The late President Jang Myung-su was both the person who created the beautiful campus as it is today and a towering figure who designed JBNU's 100-year future. We will not forget his noble spirit. We will use the scholarship donated by Mrs. Lee Soon-rye with care and do our utmost to help our students grow into leaders who will guide the region and the nation.'
