Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) College of Medicine student Lee Se-hyun (first-year) has donated KRW 1,000,000 in prize money she received from various academic societies and competitions to Jeonbuk National University Hospital for use by vulnerable patients, creating a heartwarming story.

The donation was raised by pooling the prize money Lee Se-hyun earned from participating in various academic societies and competitions.

Under the supervision of Professor Kim Hyun-ho of the Department of Pediatrics, Lee Se-hyun conducted research in neonatal neurology, winning outstanding paper awards at the Korean Society of Medical Informatics, the Korean Society of Medical Artificial Intelligence, and international conferences. She also stood out in academic and startup fields, winning the Grand Prize at the High-Tech Startup Idea Competition.

She stated that she hopes to give back to society by donating her accumulated achievements, and that she particularly hopes the funds will be used for the treatment and healthy development of vulnerable pediatric patients who visit Jeonbuk National University Hospital. As a student, she cannot participate directly in clinical care, but this reflects her determination to contribute to patients through research and sharing.

The donation was also influenced by her advisor, Professor Kim Hyun-ho. Professor Kim practiced donating during his residency, and his example served as a model for his student. Professor Kim said, "Lee Se-hyun’s warm heart and actions in turning her research achievements into a form of sharing while still a student will serve as an example to many."

Lee Se-hyun said, "Although it is not a large amount, I hope it helps sick children receive treatment and grow up healthy," and added, "I will continue research on neonatal nervous system disorders as well as pediatric refractory diseases and tumors to contribute to more patients."
